Customer required the use of cold spray to fix the corrosion and crack in an Alfa Romeo engine block. Cold spray is ideal for this as we can build up a lot of material to fix corrosion without distorting the engine block, then the block can be skimmed. The crack on the side of the engine block presented more of a challenge — our solution was to stitch the block together by drilling and tapping through the block and then securing the crack with bolts so it couldn't move. Once this was done we sealed the crack with cold spray to stop leaking.
Cold Metal Spray saved a rare engine block from being scrapped. Being able to do this allowed the customer to rebuild his engine and get the car back on the road with original parts. Without Cold Metal Spray this would have been near impossible as CMS is not affected by all the many impurities in an engine block, especially when it has corroded and gone through a material phase change. These spare parts are extremely hard to find and are very expensive, as well as it being important to keep the originality of the vehicle.
