V12 Engine Block Liner Bore Repair

Technician inspecting a large V12 engine block before cold spray liner bore repair

The client came to us with a V12 engine block that had worn liner bore seal housings. The customer requested Cold Metal Spray to build up a nickel coating on the worn liner bore seal housing, which had been over-machined to remove wear damage, enabling the bore to be machined back into tolerance. Cold metal spray would save huge amounts of downtime and provide a massive cost saving to the end customer.

The Solution

Cold Metal Spray applied a nickel coating on the lower liner bore seal housing to build up enough material so the bore size was smaller than the finish size. The customer then machined back the nickel coating at our site to the finish size.

Conclusion

Cold Metal Spray was successfully used to build up material on the lower liner bore seal housing, allowing the block to be machined back to tolerance. Using Cold Metal Spray as a repair method saved the customer money and allowed the engine to go back into service faster than having a new one made, thus saving more money.
