Applications

Metal Coatings

Cold spray applies a wide range of functional metal coatings onto diverse substrates — including metals, glass, ceramics, plastics and resins — for corrosion protection, conductivity and surface recovery.

Functional metal coatings on many substrates

Cold spray enables the application of dense, well-bonded metal coatings without the heat of conventional thermal spray. That opens up coatings on heat-sensitive substrates and lets us tailor thickness, conductivity and corrosion resistance to the job.

Anti-corrosion Coatings

Corrosion-protection coatings such as aluminium, zinc or nickel are cold sprayed to give excellent corrosion resistance across a wide temperature range, with dense coatings available in a variety of thicknesses.

Protection Coatings

These coatings serve multiple purposes, including mould-face application and saltwater protection, and are designed to be easily reworked during routine maintenance cycles.

Conductive Coatings

Highly conductive coatings such as copper, nickel or silver enable a range of electrical applications. We can apply interface layers and work across multiple substrates including metals, glass, ceramics, plastics and resins.

Machining Errors

Machining errors are common and can be costly or time-consuming to put right. Using cold spray we add material back to the part, correcting the error so it can be re-machined — saving both cost and lead time.

The advantages for metal coatings

Coat heat-sensitive parts

Low process temperature allows coatings on plastics, resins, glass and ceramics, not just metals.

Dense, well-bonded layers

Densification during spraying gives low-porosity coatings with dependable adhesion.

Tailored function

Choose corrosion resistance, conductivity or protection, and control coating thickness to suit.

Easily reworked

Protective coatings can be re-applied during routine maintenance without damaging the part.

Frequently asked questions

What metals can you cold spray as a coating?

Common choices include aluminium, zinc and nickel for corrosion protection, and copper, nickel or silver for conductive coatings. We match the powder to the performance you need.

Can you coat non-metal substrates?

Yes. Because cold spray is a low-temperature process, we can apply coatings to glass, ceramics, plastics and resins as well as metals, often using an interface layer.

How thick can the coating be?

Dense coatings are available in a range of thicknesses to suit the application — from thin functional layers to substantial build-up where required.

Are the coatings good for saltwater or marine use?

Yes. Anti-corrosion and protective coatings are well suited to saltwater and harsh environments, and are designed to be reworked during maintenance.
