Applications

Engine & Parts Repair

Solid-phase cold spray is ideal for repairing engine components and castings — the low process temperature means parts are rebuilt without heat distortion, porosity or a heat-affected zone.

Precision repair for engine components & castings

Cold spray comes into its own for the repair of engine components. Because material is deposited in the solid state at low temperature, components are not affected by heat — enabling reliable, high-quality repairs on even the most intricate and highly stressed castings.

Casting Repairs

Cold metal spray comes into its own for the repair of castings. Because of the low application temperature and the solid-phase spraying process not being affected by impurities in the casting, we can easily repair heavily corroded, damaged or worn components — with no distortion effect, even on the most intricate, highly stressed castings.

Cylinder Head & Engine Block Repairs

A very popular application of cold spray. We have repaired many damaged and corroded cylinder heads and blocks. A major cost advantage is the excellent post-machining results achieved first time, every time, because there is no heat-affected zone (HAZ) or porosity to contend with.

Sealing / Gasket-face Repairs

A popular use, as the repair has very low compressibility thanks to the densification and peening effect of the material as it is sprayed — restoring a true, dependable sealing surface.

The advantages for engine & parts repair

No heat distortion

The low-temperature, solid-state process means no warping of thin walls or precision features.

No heat-affected zone

Without a HAZ or porosity, repaired areas machine cleanly and predictably first time.

Save scrapped castings

Rebuild worn or damaged castings instead of re-casting or replacing expensive parts.

Wide material range

Nickel, aluminium, copper and composite powders matched to the base material and duty.

Frequently asked questions

Will cold spray distort my engine casting?

No. Cold spray deposits metal in the solid state at low temperature, so there is no melting and no heat-affected zone — even intricate, highly stressed castings are repaired without distortion.

Can the repaired area be machined back to tolerance?

Yes. The deposit is dense and free of porosity, so it machines cleanly and predictably, allowing the component to be brought back into tolerance first time.

What engine parts can you repair?

Common work includes cylinder heads, engine blocks, castings, sealing and gasket faces, housings and bearing surfaces. If you are unsure, send us the details and we will advise.

Is it cheaper than replacing the part?

In most cases, yes — particularly for large, complex or obsolete castings where replacement is expensive or impossible. Cold spray repair also shortens lead times.
