Cold Metal Spray Announces Stage II of the DIGICSAM Project

Cold spray equipment in operation in the workshop

Cold Metal Spray has announced Stage II of the DIGICSAM project — bringing AI control to restoration metal coatings and repair systems.

Restoration Metal Coatings and AI

Cold Metal Spray recognised early on the novel solution that AI control could bring to its coating and metal repair systems. Funding was secured for Stage I investigations, which — although split between material behaviour and automation control — concluded that a reinforced AI deep neural network, self-teaching from telemetry data, would be the way forward.

Digitalising Cold Spray Applications

Stage II involves the collection of growth data over time and material to control deposition trajectory and deposition efficiency (DE).

Aim: Digitalise Cold Spray Additive Manufacturing

The goal is to compute critical deposition paths in real time, taking account of robot dwell, and to investigate spray paths that achieve the least shadowing.

On the Right Path

To achieve even greater efficiency and operator welfare, a high frequency of path and trajectory change will be governed by the new metal profile — which is highly dependent on the substrate profile and surface condition.

We're very much looking forward to seeing how Cold Metal Spray in Manchester gets on with this ambitious second step.
